I've always liked grocery shopping. First off, it's one of the more affordable places to go on a spending spree. And secondly, it's just comforting. Growing up, my dad did the majority of our household's grocery-getting. Being the financially savvy (read: thrifty) and methodical (read: borderline obsessive) person he was, he'd make plan his route in advance, cross-referencing our local weekly circulars with his envelope of clipped coupons and his mental catalogue of which grocery stores had the best prices on which staples. And then, often with my sister and I in tow, we'd set off on a multi-store journey. He took great pride in showing us his receipts--which sometimes neared a balance of $0.00 thanks to his careful calculations and extensive knowledge of the local purveyors' coupon-doubling policies.
