My new volunteer gig continues to delight me. I'm now a co-shopper, which means every Sunday I push one of two stuffed grocery carts through the story with my fellow volunteer, who's been doing this task alone for a full year now. We start with a couple dozen boxes of cereal, the brand name stuff. This confused me at first--why not stretch the dollars even further with a cheaper store brand? My co-shopper says it's just what the people want, so I take her word for it and pile my cart high with Cheerios. When I relay this anecdote on a phone call later that night, my mom says it's about dignity and a lightbulb goes off in my head with a resounding ding.
Next up is the deli, and we grab tall stacks of pre-sliced 1/4 lb baggies of turkey, a luxury item, my co-shopper says. The price of vegetable oil is too high here, so we move on to the refrigerated section and load up on a variety of milks and packages of cream cheese and hot dogs, then turn toward the bread aisle fo…
