Greetings, friends!
Returning to real life after a vacation is never easy. While I enjoyed shirking my usual responsibilities, those duties, like any matter, accumulated and waited patiently for my return. Nothing extraordinary of course--dog kibble to order, COVID tests to schedule, newsletters to draft, and a backlog of work at the ol' day job--that sort of thing. But there's also the return of more pleasurable duties: volunteer work, therapy, cooking, my regularly scheduled human interactions (a.k.a. friend time). And then there's the more mixed or neutral stuff, like catching up on political/cultural news. Some good, some bad, some very, very bad. Zach and I sometimes refer to the mix of joy and hardship that makes up a long term relationship as our "house blend," or "special blend." Like it all comes together to make the perfect cup of coffee. So, when I start feeling bleak about the suffering that surrounds us, I try to imagine the world as its own kind of special blend.
