Speaking of friends, I've been thinking about how easy it is to lose touch with people, even the ones you really like and care about. Graduating, changing jobs, breaking up, and moving away are all big life-changers that jostle everything loose. But then there's the subtler friendship-ending stuff--losing a common interest, having less flexible schedules, periods of heightened mental illness or stress, or even just general personal growth. A little time apart turns into a lot of time apart. You stop watering the garden of your friendship entirely. You blink and a decade goes by and you suddenly realize you've missed a half dozen major life events in your friend's life, or vice versa. So then what? Are you still friends?
I was bemoaning my tendency to lose track of people on a certain private social media account and a couple friends--ones I haven't had a long talk with in ages--replied almost immediately to say that I wasn't alone, and that they did the same thing. W…
