Sit & Write #321
Greetings, friends!
I started a new job this week, which means that between this and my Blue Stoop-ing, I finally have 40 weekly hours of paid work for the first time since 2022.
My coworker is a 20 year old intern who’s still figuring out what she wants to do with her career. Without meaning to, I found myself rambling on about how long it took me to get to this point — the missteps, the despair, the flailing, the faithlessness. I must have sounded so world-weary. But everything I was ever taught about building a career ended up being a farce, or at the very least, a relic of a time long gone. Maybe I wanted to help prevent her from learning the hard way, as I did. Or maybe, like a castaway rescued after 4 years on a desert island, I was just eager to tell someone, anyone what I’d endured.
These next few weeks are going to be tough, as I figure out how to to make my brain run multiple operating systems in tandem without crossing the wires. But still, I’m deeply relieved by the security my dual jobs offer. I can finally stop job hunting and freelance hustling. I can finally focus on getting good at the things in front of me, instead of constantly pushing forward into the unknown. I haven’t totally internalized my new situation yet, but intellectually, I know it’s going to feel good when I hit my stride.
In other news:
Daycation is technically closed for registration, but if you want a last minute ticket, please reach out and I’ll see what I can do!
I wrote a very silly April Fools’ Day newsletter for Blue Stoop. Check it out if you like jokes!
Blue Stoop has a couple creative writing classes with registration deadlines next week. FYI, if a class says “sold out” it may still have financial seats and a merit scholarship available. It’s always worth applying if you’re local and low-income.
