Greetings, friends!
It's July 4th, which means there was a massive procession of music, floats, and patriotism on my block this morning. It also means there is a man coming to evict our nemeses (squirrels) from my attic sometime in the next hour. The relationship between these events is tenuous at best.
Forgive my lack of enthusiasm for the festivities--I stopped pledging my allegiance sometime in high school. As my political consciousness developed, my patriotism melted away; it's no wonder state leaders are trying to sanitize and censor the already limited public school curriculum. From where I'm sitting, it seems foolish to tidy up our violent history without actually working toward a peaceful future: a slumlord slathering white paint onto a crumbling, asbestos-stuffed wall. I know there are individuals and organizations out there pushing for remediation and change, but I get overwhelmed by the scale of the entropy already underway, jaded by the loss of life during the pandemic and t…
