Sit & Write #178
Greetings, friends!
First off, big thanks to Alison for hosting last week's Sit & Write meeting. I had a restorative trip to Virginia and while I didn't write, I did do some work for my self-paced novel-editing course. They're having us make lists of our characters and their traits, which sounds like something better suited for the beginning of the novel writing process. But being asked to repeat this step again at the novel's close has been helpful. Earlier, I found it difficult to distinguish between my characters' personalities. But I'm now finding it much easier to understand everyone's motivations and internal contradictions. I'm also catching some underdeveloped areas in my characters, which will be important to address in my next draft.
The only problem I'm having with this class is that, because I'm not quite finished with my draft yet, it's very tempting to spiral out about big plot revisions, which could derail my progress. I'm trying to remember that this is the draft I have …
