I got to drive out to Stockton, NJ, over the weekend for a socially-distant hangout with a dear friend who lives there. It was the farthest I've been away from home sans husband in months, though I did bring my chihuahua for company. As an introvert with social anxiety, being alone is a balm for me, a time to quiet my rattling brain and just move through the world without snagging on my perceptions of others. Yet, it's hard to remember to take that space, which is odd, given that the pandemic has all of us keeping our distance. But when I do remember to take time to myself, I arrive at my destination refreshed, with greater capacity for long conversation and fewer spiraling mental tangents. It was the same when I got back home that evening after 60 miles of pleasant silence. A fresh appreciation for my husband's kind face, a welcomed single lick on the knee from my other, car-averse dog.
