Whatcha eatin'? + Sit & Write #86
Greetings, friends!
First off, thanks to everyone who reached out to tell me they enjoyed last week's newsletter. I like the idea of this newsletter being a space to test out essay concepts and build a little more creative writing into my weekly schedule. Now, do I actually have the time and energy to make that happen every week? Not really. But I will try to work storytelling in a little more frequently.
Related, a revelation: for me, the thing that is easiest and more pleasurable to write about is food. There's probably a lot to unpack here, more than a reasonably long newsletter could accommodate. But, in short, it's fun to write about because 1) I'm both religiously and ethnically Jewish; food is one of the ways diasporas maintain a coherent identity across space and time, 2) food is a perfect lens for exploring nearly any issue, ranging from history to psychology to economics to social justice, 3) food is closely tied to memory, and memory to food.
